Jacob Bethell could now lose his potential spot in the England line-up for the Ashes. Following his performances in the ODI series against New Zealand, it raises concern for the team ahead of the Ashes. Bethell was in talks to play at number three for the team.
England has suffered yet another ODI series loss lately, as they lost to New Zealand. This is not just a loss for them; it turned out to be a whitewash, just a few weeks before The Ashes. With this, there has been one player who would be under scrutiny for his performances,
With the Ashes coming closer, England is looking bold and confident. But at the same time, there have been questions about the form of Bethell and whether he will be a part of the playing XI or not. At some point in time, there were also discussions to have Bethell bat at number three instead of Ollie Pope.
1. Jacob Bethell in NZ
Jacob Bethell had a terrible outing in New Zealand for the ODI series. While the series was not good for the majority of the English players, it would be one which Jacob Bethell would want to forget. He was only able to score 31 runs for the team across all three games, averaging 10.33.
Jacob Bethell in the New Zealand ODI series:
- First ODI: 2 (12)
- Second ODI: 18 (28)
- Third ODI: 11 (16)
All three games played by Bethell in this series have not gone well. Despite being a part of the team's top order, he was unable to prove his potential for the Ashes. This also comes as a major setback for the young talent, ahead of the Test series, which is set to
Things have not gone well for Jacob Bethell since he brought up his maiden ton against South Africa in September. Since then, he has even found it difficult to score even 30 runs in an innings. This now puts a big question on whether he will be present at the number three spot for England, or it will be Ollie Pope.
2. Bethell’s Test Career
Jacob Bethell has played a handful of Test matches, but he has not been able to show his potential in them. He made his Test debut a year ago against New Zealand at Christchurch. Bethell came down at bat at number three for the team in his debut game and scored 10 in the first innings. But during the chase, he scored 50 runs off 37 balls to help England win the game.
Jacob Bethell in Tests:
- Innings: 8
- Not Out: 1
- Runs: 271
- Average: 38.71
- Strike Rate: 69.30
- 100s: 0
- 50s: 3
Batting at the same position in the second Test, Bethell brought up his best score in a Test match. He was able to score 96 runs in the second innings before losing his wicket to Tim Southee. Closing to a ton in New Zealand against a strong bowling line-up allowed Jacob Bethell of intent.
He continued to perform well for the team even in the final Test of his debut series. Jacob failed to score well in the first innings, but scored 76 runs off 96 balls in the second innings, putting England back in the game. Except for him, only Joe Root was able to score above 50 in this innings.
3. Ollie Pope’s Test Career
Currently, if there is any batsman for England who fits at the number three spot, it is Ollie Pope. He has been batting at this spot for a while and has gained experience in scoring runs for the team. Pope has an average of 41.60 for the team when he bats at the number three position.
Ollie Pope in Tests:
- Innings: 107
- Not Out: 5
- Runs: 3607
- Average: 35.36
- Strike Rate: 64.36
- 100s: 9
- 50s: 16
But he is also facing competition with Jacob Bethell at this spot. With Bethell being under scrutiny for his performances against New Zealand, fans expect Ollie Pope to continue at this spot. He played at this spot against India in the five-match Test series, coming out as one for the team.
Eight of the nine Test centuries scored by Ollie Pope have come when he batted at the third spot. England selectors will have a tough time deciding whether they should go with Jacob Bethell at this spot and see how he plays, or back the experience of Ollie Pope at number three.
