New Zealand’s Suzie Bates was all set to celebrate her majestic milestone of being the first woman cricketer to play 350 international games. But the opener had a forgettable outing as she was trapped right in front of the wicket in the first ball of their World Cup match against South Africa Women.

‌After losing their respective opening games at the ICC Women’s World Cup, New Zealand Women and South Africa Women came up against each other at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Monday. In a contest of the bottom dwellers, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first on a seemingly flat deck under the afternoon sun.

It was not just another game for the White Ferns’ opener, Suzie Bates, setting a historic milestone of being the first woman cricketer to play in 350 international games, as she marked her guard. However, the 38-year-old batter had a forgettable outing after being trapped in front of the wicket by medium pacer Marizanne Kapp in the first ball of the match.

Bates missed a straight delivery that pitched on a length before hitting her pad in front of the leg stump. The umpire had no hesitation in raising her finger as the veteran batter, more out of desperation, burned a review as well.

The replays showed the ball crashing onto the leg stump as she hesitantly started her walk back to the dressing room. Among the battle of experienced cricketers, it was Kapp who triumphed, as she celebrated becoming the most capped ODI player for the Proteas Women in style.

Twitter was shocked as Bates’ horror show in the World Cup continued with the batter getting her second consecutive duck after 53 innings of not being dismissed for a blob.
