Is the 2027 World Cup Turning Into a Repeat of India's 2007 World Cup.

The Indian team is now back on the same track as it did after the 2003 World Cup. With the 2027 World Cup approaching, will the team repeat the same performance as they did in the 2007 World Cup?

Indian fans have always been good at noticing similar patterns to what happened in the past. And this is currently being used by the fans to determine how the 2027 World Cup is expected to be for the team. While the majority is expecting India to win the title, some even say that the team is walking down the bad road,

Even the 2023 World Cup was a re-telecast of the 2003 World Cup to the Indian audience, a country which lost its way in the finals. Now, the moves by the selectors committee are also keeping up with it, which caused such a disaster in the 2007 World Cup as well. The fans are waiting to find out whether there will be a disaster in the coming World Cup or a happy ending to such players as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

1. 2003 World Cup Aftermath

The 2003 World Cup was the previous time India had finished as runners-up. Obviously, before the 2023 World Cup, which most fans remember. During this period, the Indian team was headed by Sourav Ganguly and the performances were excellent. The squad strength was admirable considering that the team had players like Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Rahul Dravid and others.

This made India end second in the Pool stages and even go up to the semi finals. The team entered the finals after a decisive victory over Kenya, hence the finals were against Australia. India had been dominating all through the tournament but they never got to dominate the competition with Australia.

And the same happened in the finals, as India suffered a loss by 125 runs, losing the ultimate clash. Sachin Tendulkar finished as the highest scorer of the tournament. Greg Chappell became the coach of the Indian team. Preparing for the 2027 World Cup, he made some changes.

Thus, Sourav Ganguly was sacked as a captain. Despite leading the team to the finals, he played as a player. Rahul Dravid was appointed as the new captain of the team for the 2007 World Cup. Fans expected that India will be able to easily reach the playoffs in the next edition.

However, the 2007 World Cup proved to be the one that all the Indian fans would not want to remember. This team was out in the Group stages. Despite having weak teams such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Bermuda in the group. The question remains with the fans: what would have happened had Sourav Ganguly remained the captain?

2. India Follows Same Route for the 2027 World Cup

As the 2027 World Cup approaches, it seems that the Indian team is following the same road as it did after the 2023 World Cup. Hosting the World Cup at home, India was seen as the top contenders to win the title. Rohit Sharma led the Indian team for the first time in the World Cup.

And the dominance was unmatched, as India went on to win all nine of their games in the League stages. Later in the semi-final stage too, India secured a win over New Zealand by 70 runs, marching to the World Cup finals. But they faced the 2003 World Cup ghosts, Australia.

History repeated after two decades, as India lost the World Cup final against Australia by 6 wickets. The role which was played by Ricky Ponting in the 2003 World Cup was played by Travis Head in the 2023 World Cup. Millions of hopes were shattered, but fans wanted Rohit Sharma to lead the Indian team once again.

The other interesting fact is that Virat Kohli (765) was able to set the record of Sachin Tendulkar (673) for the most runs during a particular World Cup. Following the 2023 World Cup, India succeeded in the following two ICC matches, giving the team confidence in the 2027 World Cup.

However, to surprise the fans, Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI Selectors decided to exclude Rohit Sharma as the team skipper in the ODI format. Sounds similar to what happened to Sourav in 2003, right? Today, when Shubman Gill is about to lead the team in the 2027 World Cup, will it be the same as it was in 2007, or will Gill alter the script?
