DRS has helped the game of cricket become more foolproof by taking out umpiring howlers, but the technology came in for some scrutiny during the New Zealand vs Bangladesh game in the World Cup. Amelia Kerr was in disbelief after ball tracking showed an abnormal path to overrule the umpire’s call.

‌New Zealand fought hard to register a respectable total after opting to bat against Bangladesh in the Women’s ODI World Cup in Guwahati. Captain Sophie Devine and Brooke Halliday came up with gritty half-centuries on a slow and sluggish surface to guide the White Ferns to 227/9 in their allotted 50 overs. Leg-spinner Rabeya Khan led a disciplined bowling display from the Tigresses with a spell of 3/30 in 10 overs .

But in return, Bangladesh’s batting frailties were yet again opened up by an accurate display from New Zealand with the new ball. The pace trio of Rosemary Mair, Jess Kerr, and Lea Tahuhu all picked up two wickets each as the Asian side stared down the barrel at 66/7.

The Bangladesh lower order showed admirable resistance, but Amelia Kerr came up with a timely breakthrough to end the Kiwis’ frustration. She came up with a well-flighted googly against Fahima Khatun, in the fourth ball of the 31st over. It pitched on a good length outside off-stump before turning into the batter, who tried to dead bat it.

She failed to make contact with the wrong one as it passed the inside edge to hit her back pad. Kerr was confident, and so was the wicketkeeper as they went for a big shout. The umpire was also convinced and had no hesitation in raising her finger quite instantaneously.

Fahima rushed to her partner before deciding to review the on-field umpire’s call, and replays confirmed there was no edge. The Kiwi huddle was ready to celebrate just when they received a shock of their life.

The ball tracking showed the ball missing the stumps by quite a distance as the TV umpire directed to reverse the on-field call. Kerr, along with Rosemary Mair, was left with a gaping mouth as she could not believe how the ball missed the timber.

Twitter reciprocated Kerr’s shock as Fahima Khatun continued her fighting knock.
