Fielding at short leg is a skill of its own, with players needing courage and extraordinary reflexes to master the position. Sai Sudharsan displayed both in the second Test between India and the West Indies in Delhi, gobbling up the most unlikely of catches to leave John Campbell shocked.

‌India extended their domination against the West Indies on the second day of the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. After starting proceedings at 318/2, skipper Shubman Gill’s unbeaten century took the side to 518/5 before the hosts decided to put the Windies in.

With the home side aiming for quick wickets ahead of tea, the West Indies batters did well to negate the early threat from the new ball duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. It looked like the visitors’ openers had done their job as Ravindra Jadeja was introduced with four more overs to play before the break.

But a moment of good fortune, along with some courage from Sai Sudharsan, toppled the Windies’ plans. After welcoming Jadeja with a paddle sweep that went for four, John Campbell repeated the feat to a tossed-up delivery that came into him after pitching on a good length.

This time, it was a full-blooded sweep targeting the vacant square leg boundary, but Sudharsan stood in the batter’s way. He was stationed at short leg and tried to duck just as Campbell played the shot. But the powerful strike hit his right hand just above the wrist, before running through his chest and ricocheting onto his helmet grill.

The Tamil Nadu player looked in serious pain but kept his senses intact to complete an excellent catch. He was in serious pain as he walked towards square leg, even without celebrating the dismissal.

The batter was shell-shocked as he would not have expected such an end to his innings, even in the wildest of dreams. Just as the players rushed towards him in joy, the physio also made his way, and Sudharsan walked off with the ice pack on his hand.

Twitter was stunned, so was the Indian dressing room, with head coach Gautam Gambhir and bowling coach Morne Morkel with smiles on their faces as they watched the replay.
