Match Report

New Zealand Women continued their winning ways with a disciplined all-round display, defeating Pakistan Women by 42 runs in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 in Colombo. Sophie Devine’s composed half-century was the cornerstone of a professional batting effort, while Amelia Kerr’s all-round performance tilted the game in the White Ferns’ favour.

After being put in to bat on a slightly tacky surface, New Zealand had a decent start before Bates and Plimmer fell to the new ball pair of Diana Baig and skipper Fatima Sana, after showing promise initially. The innings found stability through Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr, who admirably combined caution with aggression. Skipper Devine unleashed her power with hits through midwicket and cover, while Kerr played the perfect foil, rotating strike and finding the odd boundaries. Their 91-run partnership resurrected the innings, helping New Zealand to 142/3 in the 33rd over. Pakistan clawed back through left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu’s clever variations, as she dismissed both set batters in quick succession. The New Zealand skipper made her fourth consecutive fifty-plus score, hitting seven fours and two sixes during her 94-ball 82. Meanwhile, Kerr made a patient 47, which included five fours, before missing out on a well-deserved half-century. Brooke Halliday’s valuable knock ensured the White Ferns ended at a competitive 224/8 on a slow pitch that began to grip. Fatima Sana, yet again, stood out for Pakistan with her impeccable control, ending with 3/35.

Though Pakistan lost opener Omaima Sohail cheaply, Sidra Amin anchored the innings with her textbook drives and sweeps. Fellow opener Muneeba Ali was slow but hung in there, but Pakistan’s chase lost rhythm after the powerplay. Amelia Kerr broke the second wicket partnership with a beautiful googly that went through Muneeba. With the introduction of Lea Tahuhu, the game tilted heavily in favour of the Kiwis. Tahuhu’s late swing and skiddy pace accounted for the dangerous Sidra, who scored six boundaries during her knock of 61 off 84 balls. The veteran pacer also accounted for Aliya Riaz and Fatima Sana to finish with 3/28 as the Women in Green’s innings ended at 182 with more than three overs to spare. Amelia Kerr and sister Jess Kerr ended with two wickets each.

Player of the Match

New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine was named Player of the Match for anchoring New Zealand’s innings with a knock of 82 under pressure.
