Match Report
Australia’s decision to bowl first proved to be the right call as they made early inroads into India’s top order. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood used the seam movement effectively, reducing India to 50/3 in the 12th over. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma both fell cheaply, leaving the middle-order to rebuild. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer worked hard to steady the innings, but the scoring rate was slow. Kohli managed 41 runs from 52 balls, while Iyer made 33 off 46. However, India struggled to accelerate, and the pressure mounted as Australia’s bowlers maintained tight lines.
Axar Patel, India’s most effective lower-order batter, played a valuable cameo, hitting 38 runs off 24 balls. His late burst gave India a slight boost, but with regular wickets falling, they ended their innings on 230/9 in 50 overs. Australia’s bowlers, led by Starc and Hazlewood, controlled the game from the start, and despite Axar’s late resistance, India was always on the back foot.
In response, Australia’s chase was set up by an aggressive opening partnership between Travis Head and Matthew Short. The pair took Australia to 60/0 after the first 10 overs, with Head playing an attacking role. India’s bowlers, despite a few breakthroughs, were unable to put a halt to Australia’s chase. Head’s 45 from 50 balls and Short’s supporting knock of 32 from 40 balls gave Australia a solid foundation.
Mitchell Marsh then came in and anchored the chase. He played a calm and composed knock, scoring 55 from 60 balls. His steady presence in the middle overs ensured that Australia maintained control over the chase. Despite a few wickets in the middle order, the target of 231 never looked out of reach. Alex Carey’s quickfire 35 from 35 balls helped Australia cross the line with 4 wickets to spare, finishing at 232/6 in 45.2 overs.
Australia’s dominant chase and tight bowling attack meant India’s total of 230 was never enough. The home side comfortably reached the target, and Mitchell Starc’s brilliant bowling performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
Player of the Match
Mitchell Starc, for his brilliant 3/45, led Australia’s bowling effort and set up the win.
