Miller and Coetzee ruled out of Pakistan white-ball leg with injury, de Zorzi and Baartman added as cover

South Africa have been forced to make multiple changes to their white-ball squads for the upcoming series in Pakistan beginning October 28. Tony de Zorzi, Matthew Breetzke, and Ottniel Bartmaan are the beneficiaries while Donovan Ferreira will captain in T20s in lieu of the injured David Miller.

David Miller will not travel to Pakistan after having been initially named as South Africa's stand-in skipper for the T20I series

Stand-in T20I skipper David Miller has sustained a grade-1 hamstring strain during the preparations for a three-match T20I series in Pakistan and will play no part in the series as he begins a phased rehabilitation program. The Proteas will also be without the services of Gerald Coetzee and Kwena Maphaka, who unlike Miller were also set to take part in the three ODIs that will follow the T20s. The trio has been replaced by Tony de Zorzi, Matthew Breetzke, and Ottniel Bartmaan in the shortest format, with the latter also added to the ODI squad as bowling cover.

Miller's absence means Donovan Ferreira is set to lead the T20I side for the first time in a multi-match series, with regular skipper Aiden Markram rested for the white-ball leg following the two-match Test series that ended all square. Ferreira had never captained in a professional game until just last month, when he was named captain of his domestic side Titans before getting the opportunity to lead a second-string national team in a one-off T20I in Namibia a couple of weeks ago. It was the same game where Coetzee sustained his latest blow as he walked off with a pectoral issue midway through his second over, adding to a string of setbacks that already saw him miss the Champions Trophy earlier in the year. Even though the Namibia encounter consequently ended in defeat, Ferreira will be upbeat of their chances against Pakistan considering the return of a host of a big names such as Quinton de Kock, Dewald Brevis, and Lungi Ngidi.

Top-order batters Tony de Zorzi and Matthew Breetzke have been added as batting cover, the former in line for a T20I debut after notching a match-winning ton in the second Test in Rawalpindi while the latter is set to lead in ODIs in absence of the injured Temba Bavuma. Right-arm quick Ottniel Bartmaan has also been added to both contingents, the 32-year-old having last featured for South Africa in December last year.

The first T20I is slated to take place in Rawalpindi on October 28, followed by two back-to-back games in Lahore on October 31 and November 1 respectively. The two teams will then travel to Faisabalad for three ODIs set to run from November 4 to 8.
