Match Report

A nail-biting ODI at Bay Oval ended with New Zealand edging England by six runs in a gripping contest that swung repeatedly. On a fresh Mount Maunganui surface, both sides traded control before the home side sealed the deal late into the contest.

Put into bat under clear skies, New Zealand endured a steady but disciplined start. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra weathered Luke Wood’s early swing before opening up on both sides of the wicket. Once Ravindra departed, Kane Williamson anchored the innings with a typically composed 64 off 77 balls, a knock which included five fours and a six. On the other end, Conway also looked in great nick, scoring eight fours and a six during his 89-ball 71. A late surge from Daryl Mitchell (47 off 40) and Michael Bracewell pushed New Zealand to 281/8 in their allotted 50 overs. England’s bowlers, Adil Rashid (2/45) and Wood (3/48) in particular, prevented the home side from posting a truly imposing total.

England’s reply was led by Joe Root’s classy 83 (6*4) in 92 balls and Jamie Smith’s fluent 59 (7*4, 1*6) off 66 balls, who together added 104 for the second wicket. The chase appeared under control at 198/3 in the 38th over, but Mitchell Santner’s canny left-arm spin created doubts in the minds of the batters. The Kiwi skipper dismissed Jacob Bethell and Jos Buttler in quick succession to turn the tide in favour of the home side. With Root dismissed by a Henry off-cutter and Brook caught in the deep moments later, England’s lower order was left scrambling. The Kiwis maintained tight lines throughout the innings, with Duffy’s ice-cool final over sealing a six-run win. Henry ended with figures of 3/42 in 10 overs, with Santner picking up 2/44 in 10 overs.

Player of the Match

New Zealand pacer Matt Henry was named Player of the Match for his match-winning spell of 3/42, including a maiden, in 10 overs that broke the back of the England chase with decisive strikes in the death overs.
