Santos Pause Neymar Contract Talks Amid Fitness and Wage Concerns.

Santos have halted Neymar’s contract renewal discussions due to worries over his fitness and high salary. The 33-year-old, sidelined since September with a thigh injury, has managed just 21 appearances, six goals, and three assists in 2025. His contract expires in December, with talks likely to resume only after he proves sustained fitness.

When the fairytale return of Neymar to Santos began in January 2025, fans hoped it would spark a revival for both the player and the club. However, those dreams have dimmed as the 33-year-old’s injury troubles have persisted, forcing Santos to pause contract renewal talks. Neymar’s current deal runs until December 2025, but club officials have decided to delay discussions amid concerns over his fitness and the financial strain of his high wages.

The forward has played only 21 matches this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists, before being sidelined since September 19 with a rectus femoris muscle injury in his right thigh. Despite maintaining a good relationship with the player, Santos are prioritising their survival in the Brazilian Serie A and plan to reassess his situation after an internal review.

Neymar’s return has boosted the club’s commercial value through shirt sales and global attention, yet his limited availability has raised doubts about his long-term viability. His recurring injuries have also kept him out of Brazil’s national team since October 2023. Carlo Ancelotti has stated that Neymar remains in contention for the 2026 World Cup, but only if he regains full fitness and form before the season ends.
